| Why West Africa? | Why Mercy Ministries? | |
|
But the world is so big, why target West Africa with the mercy of God? A UNAIDS Press Release of 13 July 2004 suggests there may be as many as 50 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa by the year 2010. The same organization states that this is the one area of the world in which the orphan crisis continues to grow. The Bible is very clear that God has a heart for orphans. Psalm 68:5 states, "Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation." And if this is the kind of heart God has, sub-Saharan Africa (of which West Africa is a part) must be an area of the world for which he has great concern.

What is it about mercy ministry that makes it worth all the fuss? Why should Americans invest their lives and finances in providing for those less fortunate in West Africa? I can’t answer that question for you, but let me give you four reasons why it is so valuable to me.
West African Mercy Ministries was established to make these benefits available to God’s children. Whether you are a church, a small group, a civic group a business or simply an individual follower of Jesus, God promises that involvement in extending mercy in his name can revolutionize your relationship with him. But even more importantly, as children of God we are to be about bringing him glory. And when in Exodus 33:19 God was responding to Moses request to see that glory, he said, " I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy." God delights in his glory being seen through his mercy and his grace. WAMM longs to be about giving his children an opportunity to be involved in bringing such delight to our God! |

Caring for orphans is the burning desire of WAMM. It was in response to learning of the enormity of the orphan crisis in sub-Saharan Africa that this ministry was formed. It is the enormity of this crisis that motivates us to be involved in church planting, that compels us to provide medical services and gives us a passion for youth ministry. Indeed, orphan care is the heartbeat of this mission. It is also the heartbeat of God. And that is great news because it gives us confidence that as we pursue mercy ministry with orphans in mind, we are working in concert with the God we desire to serve. |
A most pressing need in Ghana is for a home for infants who are diagnosed with a disability or illness. For example, babies diagnosed with HIV or other life-threatening conditions are rejected by their families and left to die.
We have begun work on an infant and hospice home that will care for the
needs of these sick and dying children. We feel it is important
and God-honoring to make sure the most vulnerable children are cared for
in Christ's love in whatever time the Lord has for them on this earth. |
An important part of church planting is making contacts with unsaved people in a targeted community. One effective means of establishing such contacts in Ghana is through the provision of medical services in villages without such services. This excites our medical personnel who not only desire to provide care for the orphans, but also pray for opportunities to evangelize as they actively express God’s mercy. |
As we have visited Ghana we quickly came to recognize there are very few churches with which we can partner due to our commitment to what we see as doctrinal purity. Yet Our Strategy remains to Partner with West African Churches to Mobilize West African Believers to Care for West African Orphans as a Solution to a West African Crisis to the Glory of our Mutual God. And so we began to realize that the first step in partnering with a sufficient number of indigenous believers may just be active involvement in church planting and pastoral training. In so doing, we would have the privilege of making many of the disciples God would use to be his mercy ministers. |
